Simon goes to an open place in the jungle, where, quoting directly from the book, "a patch of rock came close to the surface and would not allow more than little plants and ferns to grow. The whole space was walled with dark aromatic bushes, and was a bowl of heat and light." In one corner a fallen tree is covered by a mat of climbing plants and Simon squats down in the middle in a "little cabin screened off from the open space by a few leaves." It seems likely from the description of Simon's fit, when he imagined conversing with the Lord of the Flies, and his habit of fainting that Simon was epileptic. He probably sought a place to be alone so that the other boys wouldn't witnessing during an epileptic fugue.

I suppose that some people might suggest that Simon's secret place symbolises a return to the womb or an air raid shelter. But I think that it simply symbolises his separateness from the rest of the boys. Simon seems to be epileptic and I think that he simply goes to his secret place to be alone when he feels a seizure coming on. After possibly witnessing the complete lack of sympathy shown to Percival, when the littlun had a break down (the boys simply found it mildly amusing) Simon no doubt felt it safer and less embarrassing to remove himself from sight during an epileptic fugue. The clearing also represents the garden of eden which becomes corrupted by the rotting pigs head much like corruption from sin.

Simon may have suffered from epilepsy, which would explain his attack, when he held an internal conversation with the Lord of the Flies and then collapsed. He seems to have been prone to fainting too. Simon chose to spend time alone perhaps to avoid being seen during an epileptic episode and went often to his 'secret place' in the jungle.
