The first months of a young koala's life are spent entirely within the mother's pouch. Like all marsupials, they are born extremely undeveloped. After attaching their mouths to a teat within the pouch, they remain there for some months with the teat firmly swollen in their mouths, so they cannot be accidentally dislodged.

Immediately after birth, the young koala joey crawls to the mother's pouch, using a combination of instinct and lured by the smell of its mother's milk. Once in the pouch, it latches onto a teat which then swell in its mouth, securing it firmly in place for the next few months. The koala joey remains in the pouch for at least 7 months.

The young koala joeys are born from the normal birth canal, from where they must make their journey, clinging to the mother's fur, up to the pouch. This occurs while the koalas are up in the tree. They do not give birth on the ground.
