The Alpine Ibex, Capra ibex, is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps.
The Spanish Ibex and the Middle Eastern Nubian Ibex are very close relatives of the Alpine Ibex.
Being an excellent climber, its habitat is the rocky region along the snow line above alpine forests of the European Alps.
Today, about 4,000 Alpine Ibex roam the area of the Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy's oldest and best known national park. It is located in the Graian Alps.

The Pyrenean ibex became extinct in January 2000. The Pyrenean ibex weighed between 55 to 176 pounds. In 2009, a cloning experiment was conducted with DNA from Pyrenean ibex which resulted in a live specimen which died shortly after birth due to lung failure.
