Chemiosmosis occurs with those protons diffuse back, out of the intermembrane space, across the inner mitochondrial membrane, back into the matrix: as they do so, they pass through the membrane spannning ATP synthases which make ATP from ADP + Pi.

Chemiosmosis happens when one side of the membrane is at a higher charge then the other side. This stores a lot of energy in the form of a hydrogen ion gradient across a membrane and that store energy is used to power the ATP systhase enzyme to make ATP.

This is where most of the ATP come from ( 32to 34 ATP )
