Tribally, the Apache reservations are still active in the southwestern United States. However, there are also Apaches that scattered from the reservations. For instance, my grandfather was an Apache that grew up in Florida away from tribal life, although he still had an appreciation for his background.

There are and were 6 major groups of Apache people and languages and they lived in many more groups than that. Today there are about 60,000 Apache and there are Apache lands in Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma and Texas. There are nine federally recognized Apache reservations:

Apache Tribe of Oklahoma

Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, Arizona

Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma

Jicarilla Apache Nation, New Mexico

Mescalero Apache Tribe of the Mescalero Reservation, New Mexico

San Carlos Apache Tribe of the San Carlos Reservation, Arizona

Tonto Apache Tribe of Arizona

White Mountain Apache Tribe of the Fort Apache Reservation, Arizona

Yavapai-Apache Nation of the Camp Verde Indian Reservation, Arizona

Lipan Apache is a state-recognized tribe headquartered in Mcallen Texas .

Apache people today live in many other parts of the US, Canada and Mexico as well, especially in California and troughout the Southwest.

The Apache people in what is now Sonora, Mexico were largely killed in the wars and formal scape bounty system, or fled to the US in the 1800s and/or some intermarried in Mexico and lost their tribal identification.

Also, the Genizaro people of New Mexico are of mixed native background who had been taken in the Mexican slave trade and some of their roots are from the Apache, A large percentage of long term New Mexican families in northern New Mexico are of Genizaro roots.
