The majority of the novel takes place in New Orleans, LA.

The settings all work together to create different settings for the steps of Edna's growth. They serve as symbols for her level of individuality and nonconformity and develop these themes. Cheniere Caminada is the most freeing setting where Edna can really be herself. She goes there for Sunday mass where she actually requests Robert's presence instead of him just showing up wherever she is. She becomes sick on the island but Robert waits hours for her to wake up. This takes place after her first swim making her escape to a freeing environment. This setting symbolizes the freedom coming from self-isolation. Grand Isle is the middle level of Edna's growth where she is trying to become and individual but can't quite accomplish it yet. The island has a sense of freedom but her husband is still there so she must still be the Victorian wife. She does learn some ways of the Creoles on the island that are typical Victorian women yet still speak freely. On Grand Isle, she is expected to be the perfect mother even though she doesn't want to. New Orleans is a mix of the other two settings with two houses. In New Orleans in the big house she is supposed to be entertaining members of society and confining to what society wants her to do. The pigeon house allows her to be independent yet also in society. She can move away from the materialistic society but yet the house is still not enough and she must return to the sea where she feels free.
