The Hydrogen ion is added to take the place of the energized electron in the light reaction of photosynthesis. The Hydrogen electron is taken from an H2O molecule. The oxygen is released as a waste product and the rest of the Hydrogen goes off to do work as energy is released.

Photosynthesis is the process in which plants use energy from sunlight to transform water and carbon dioxide along with other minerals into oxygen and other organic compounds. The plant absorbs water from the ground and sunlight from the sun and then produces the oxygen and sugar, or glucose, into the environment. Thus, the source of oxygen during photosynthesis is the plant.
