It is next to the oil filter behind the engine; you have to access it from underneath. Contrary to what is written in the Chilton manuals, THERE IS NO NEED TO BREAK OPEN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM TO REPLACE THE STARTER MOTOR! I was able to change the starter motor on a 1998 Kia Sephia with the 1.8L DOHC engine without so much as kneeling. It is located at the upper-rear of the flywheel, just below the air-induction casting. After undoing the three bolts attaching it to the engine, the starter motor can be moved towards the passenger side of the engine. If the vapor recovery canister is simply pulled upwards, it comes out of the way, and the starter can then be cleared out of the engine.
