There are very many . The largest (260m x 24m, or 750ft x 75ft) are found in the St-Lawrence Seaway between Montreal and Lake Ontario and in the Welland Canal between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

Smaller locks are found as follows:

  • the St-Peters Canal that connects Lake Bras D'Or and the Atlantic Ocean in Cape Breton,
  • the Canso Canal between Cape Breton and the mainland in Nova-Scotia,
  • between the lower and upper Louise Basins in Quebec City,
  • at St-Ours between the St-Lawrence River and Lake Champlain in the state of New York,
  • the Lachine Canal on the West end of Montreal,
  • on the Ottawa River between Montreal and Ottawa,
  • the Rideau Canal between Ottawa on the Ottawa River and Kingston on Lake Ontario,
  • on the Trent-Severn Waterway between Trenton on Lake Ontario and Port Severn on Georgian Bay (Lake Huron),
  • at Sault St-Marie on the ST-Mary's River between Lake Huron and Lake Superior,
  • At LockPort on the Red River between Winnipeg and lake Winnipeg in Manitoba.

Why was sit necessary to build the locks in the canal?

Locks are necessary to lift barges and canal narrow boats up or down through a series of lock gates. The water level at the start of a series of lock gates may be higher or lower than the water level at the other end of the lock gates. Without the retaining effect of lock gates, the canal would simply be dry in some lengths and wet in others.
