God never demands us to call him Jehovah. But throughout the bible he does make numerous petitions for us to get to know him and become his friends. At James 4:8 we read "Draw close to God, and he will draw close to YOU". Also, Jesus plainly stated at John 17:3 that our future lives depended on us getting to know God. It says "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ"

So we can see how important it is to get to know God. Just like any friendship that you would cultivate, a very important part is to learn and use your friends name. God makes it clear what his name is. It is used over 7000 times in The Bible. Psalms 83:18 says, "That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth." We can see Jehovah is telling us his name here in the scriptures.

Some bible translations do not use Jehovah's name. But, in the original Hebrew text, as well as in the Greek, the letters YHWH are used. This is translated as YahWeh, or Jehovah. The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures is the only translation to restore Jehovah's name to all the places it belongs in the Bible.

The letters YHWH appear in Hebrew letters in early manuscripts of the Greek Septuagint, a Jewish version of the Hebrew Bible into Greek. In later copies of the Septuagint made by Christians, the YHWH has been replaced by the Greek word Kurios, which means Lord. So far, no manuscript of the Christian Greek Scriptures (Matthew-Revelation) has been found to contain YHWH in Hebrew letters or a pronunciation of that name in Greek letters, even in passages that quote verses in the Hebrew Bible that contain the name.

Jehovah's Witnesses are both a religion; but more so they are 'a people'.They are direct witnesses of Jehovah God, the Almighty, the Creator. That's what the 'apostrophe s' means: 'belonging to'. Jehovah's Witnesses belong to Jehovah. Since they 'witness' about Jehovah and for Jehovah; they are called 'Jehovah's Witnesses. They are thus even 'more than Christian'. They are Christian - - PLUS something else. They are witnesses of Christ; but more than that, they are Jehovah's Witnesses.

Jehovah's Witnesses understand the Bible to teach that Jehovah is the Father (God) and that his first creation or son is called Jesus.
