Very carefully. Sorry I couldn't resist. But... Nuke reactors are fundamentally piles of radioactive material (typically uranium) with some means, like graphite rods, to control the rate of fission in the pile. So we have literally a pile of radioactive bricks that have moderating rods thrust into them at various locations all around the pile. To slow down or stop the chain reactions in the pile they thrust the rods all the way into the pile. To speed it up, they pull the rods outward until they get the level of reaction they are looking for. Of course with large quantities of radioactive material, the nuke reactors must be shielded to prevent that toxic radiation from getting out in to the surroundings. For the shielding lead (Pb) bricks can be placed all around the pile. What I described above is a crude nuke reactor. Today's reactors are much more complex. But I actually saw such a crude reactor in action at a science fair in the State of Ohio while I was going to university in Cleveland.
