Where did the civil war battle of New Orleans take place?

Initial engagementsBy December 12, 1814, a British fleet, with more than 10,000 soldiers and sailors under the command of Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, had arrived off the eastern Louisiana coast at Lake Borgne. Protecting the entrance to Lake Borgne were five American gunboats. On December 14, in a brief but violent battle, British sailors in rowing boats, each boat armed with a small cannon, captured the vastly outnumbered gunboats. Now free to navigate Lake Borgne, soldiers of the British Army were rowed to an encampment on Pea Island, about 30 miles from New Orleans. On the morning of December 23, a vanguard of 1,500 to 2,000 British soldiers, under General John Keane, reached the east bank of the Mississippi River, less than ten miles south of New Orleans. Later that day, when news of the British position reached Jackson at New Orleans he reportedly said, "Gentlemen, the British are below us, we fight them tonight." Jackson quickly sent about 2,000 of his troops from New Orleans to a position immediately north of the British to block them from making any further advances toward the city. Jackson, because he needed time to get his artillery into position, decided to immediately attack the British. For the entire battle view go to: http://www.answers.com/Battle+of+New+Orleans?gwp=11&ver=2.3.0.609&method=3The Battle of New Orleans took place in New Orleans, Louisiana.

How many casualties did the Americans have in the Battle of New Orleans?

There wasn't a Civil War Battle of New Orleans. New Orleans depended on two forts on opposite sides of the Mississippi dozens of miles downstream to prevent a hostile force from ascending the River. These were Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip. The US Navy mounted a water-borne siege of the Forts which went on for about a week, while the Forts were bombarded from "bomb ketches". There were few casualties in this part of the operation. Then Admiral Farragut decided to run upstream with his fleet, past the Forts. Farragut easily passed the Forts and the batteries at Chalmette, Louisiana and sailed right up to the docks on the New Orleans waterfront, where a delegation of city leaders surrendered the city to him. Farragut became the first Union hero of the war and the rank of Rear Admiral, never before used in the US Navy, was created for him. He was promoted in July 1862.The Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812 took place January 8, 1815, some two weeks after the Peace Treaty ending the war had been signed. News of the Treaty had not yet crossed the Atlantic. The Americans under Major General Andrew Jackson inflicted an estimated 2,300 casualties on the British, while sustaining about 300.

War of 1812?

From Wikipedia:The War of 1812 was fought from 1812 to 1815 between the United States of America and the British Empire. The immediate stated causes for the U.S. declaration of war were several. First, a series of trade restrictions introduced by Britain to impede American trade with France, a country with which Britain was at war. The U.S. contested these restrictions as illegal under international law.[4] Second, the impressment (forced recruitment) of U.S. citizens into the Royal Navy. Third, the alleged British military support for American Indians who were offering armed resistance to the United States.[5] The war was fought in three major theatres: on the oceans, where the warships and privateers of both sides preyed on each other's merchant shipping; along the American coast, which was blockaded with increasing severity by the British who also mounted large-scale raids in the later stages of the war Improved Answer: The British won due to the fact that they completed their objectives; defend Canada by killing the Americans who tried to invade. American Deaths: 2,260 killed in action.4,505 wounded.Approx. 17,000 died from disease (estimated). British Deaths: 1,600 killed in action.3,679 wounded.3,321 died from disease. I would also like to add that Britain won the last battle between the two countries - "Battle of Fort Bowyer" and that during the time of this war Britain was also involved in the napoleon war. The Americans having failed all their objectives lately forfeited and wanted to sign a peace treaty.
