mosses are usually found in damp areas, commonly in woodlands or on the edge of streams. Some can be found in damp areas in cities. Mosses can inhabit marshy areas, slow moving waterways and boggy areas. Trees and rocks in moist regions can attract colonies of moss generally found on the north side, the side away from sunlight in the northern hemisphere

It grows on the bark and exposed surfaces of trees, on damp soil, rocks, and damp ground/surfaces in general - even cement or paving if the conditions are right.
