The distributor cap should have a 1 marked on it On the V8 engines ( regardless of firing order ) the # 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the rear and slightly towards the drivers side of the engine On the 4.9 L ( 300 cubic inch ) straight 6 - the # 1 position on the distributor cap faces away from the engine

Check the coil, coil wire, rotor, and distributor cap.

Check the pickup inside the distributor and see if its OK. Do you have spark at the ignition coil? Check the wires. Or the cap and rotor assy.
Should just "snap" in
1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 Distributor rotates counterclockwise.
If you remove the distributor cap and rotor you will see it bolted to the plate and it will have electric wires pluged into it. It will be on the right side of the distributor.
Bring the #1 cylinder up to top dead center, remove the distributor cap, mark where the rotor is pointing on the distributor body, loosen or remove the distributor hold down and pull the distributor straight up.
