The Arctic Circle is one of the five major named circles of latitude on maps of the Earth (Antarctic /Arctic Circles, Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer, and the equator) .

  • It is drawn at 66° 33' 44" (66.5622°) north of the Equator.
  • Areas north of this circle are called the Arctic. North of the Arctic Circle there is at least one 24-hour sunlit day per year and one sunless day per year.
  • The Arctic Circle passes through the Arctic Ocean, the Scandinavian peninsula, North Asia, Northern America and Greenland. Eight countries touch the the Arctic Circle: Canada, Denmark (i.e. Greenland), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, the USA (i.e. Alaska)
