One answer:

Tribe of Levi. See genealogy in 1 Chronicles 6.

Another thought:

He was a Kohathite. His family lived among the Ephraimites. For proof, see the following: 1Samuel:1:1-28 "...Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite..."

Supporting Information:

Kohath was a descendant of Levi (1 Chronicles 6:1 ). As mentioned, Samuel's father, Elkanah, was indeed a Kohathite, which would then make him from the tribe of Levi. He was called an Ephrathite because he settled in the territory of Ephraim.(1Chronicles 6:19, 22-28, 33-38).
