seems I'm answering my own question... turns out my 84 4x4 Jimmy with a 6.2 diesel and 700r4 trans runs the same 3.07 gear ratio as my 83 Sierra Classic 4x4 pick up with a 305 gas and 700r4 trans.
Is it a manual transmission or and automatic? Need to know. Auto the dipstick is to the back of the engine looking to the passenger side. Sometimes it will be a Red knob or Black. Manual trans don't have a dipstick just a plug on the side of the trans, about the middle of the trans half way up.
If it is a 1/2 ton then you have a 4L60E trans. 3/4 ton then you have a 4L80E trans.
If it's a 1/2 ton then it is a 4L60E, 3/4 ton will be a 4L80E trans.
