Front left corner of the engine compartment. the air filter on a 1.8T passat is hiding under the plastic behind the passenger's side headlight. You need to take off the flat plastic piece first. The there's a heat shield that needs to be removed (phillips screws). This will expose clips holding the upper and lower halves of the air filter housing. You unclip and pull the upper half away from the bottom. This will expose the air filter element. Don't forget, you have a pollen air filter for the interior air too. It's under the cowl, under the passenger's wiper blade area. There are several T20 torx fasteners holding the plastic in place. The pollen filter's under there. It's in your air box (usually black) under your hood. If you aren't sure contact your local dealer or buy a Haynes book for you year model and make. Front left hand corner behind headlight. BE PREPARED FOR THE HEAT SHIELD SCREWS, they are very,very hard to get to, especially the lower screws. I had to go out and but a special screwdriver to get this done.

Up front on the drivers side. In order to remove and install easily you have to remove the big plastic pan that covers the bottom of the engine. Have a good oil filter wrench handy in case it is hard to get off.
