I have a 1999 and the air filter is all the way on the upper left hand side after you open the hood, remove the plastic and the big vacuum looking hose, you can see the housing for the air filter. It is a huge pain, clamps are really tight and you are better off just paying to get it done. It usually costs less than the air filter itself if you bought it yourself.

It's located near the oil filter and on oil cooler/filter plate.

See the other FAQ thread about the use of an oil filter wrench when carrying out an oil change.

I am looking for the same answer. I found Castrol Synthetic Oil meets the Volkswagen Passat requirements per the Passat manual. I found it at an Advance Auto Parts store. I havn't checked the drain plug location or type, or the filter location.

You will need to remove the gas tank from your 2004 VW Passat in order to change the fuel filter. Remove the gas line. Remove the fuel filter retaining plate. Reverse the process to install the new fuel filter.
The fuel filter is underneath the car on the right hand side by the back door. It is real simple to change and easy to access it.
their's no cabin filter for that model year
I have been informed that the fuel filter in a 1999 VW Passat is located underneath the car, near the right rear wheel, mounted to the frame. It is supposedly covered by a black cover and relatively simple to replace. I am not sure what tools are needed as we are going to attempt that tonight. !AnswerThe fuel filter is located the right rear wheel in front of the rear axle. AnswerThe fuel filter is located in the engine bay of my Passat (2000 reg). Its right beside the oil filter located under the engine cover. There are two different filter types for the Passat - mine has a number of pipes conencted to the top. The piece with all of the pipes is not the filter however but rather the cylindrical object it is screwed into.
10w30 for sure. Ask the guys at Checker or Auto Zone to look up what type of filter you need.
fuel filter is located in front of right hand rear wheel under car, behind plastic panel
Under the glove box on the passenger side.
As far as I remember from my old V Dub days is there wasn't an oil filter but a screen located at the drainplug. Therefore you would lose your oil by removing it. If it has an after market filter you should be able to change it with little spillage.
1 gallon, with a filter change.
