I also own a 2002 Kia Optima and just had it diagnosed with a bad crank position sensor. When the sensor shorts, the engine will not respond to how much gas it's being given, and will sometimes stall out if I am going below 5mph when the short happens. The sensor can short at any speed and the RPMs will suddenly drop, the engine will be unresponsive to gas or lack of it, and then a few seconds later the RPM will jump back up to where it was before the short. This has been happening erratically for months. Sometimes it will happen two, three times a day and sometimes it will be a month or two where it does not happen. I was told that the problem gets worse with time, and eventually the sensor will go completely out and the car will not start.Hope this helps! Good luck
