To change the fluid, remove the pan, replace the internal filter, clean the gasket material from the transmission and pan, then use a new gasket and re-install the pan and add new fluid until the level is up. Most people don't bother, they just take it to a transmission shop. Watch the specials, sometimes you'll get some good deals from transmission shops. Sometimes the deals are lower than the cost of the oil, gasket and filter.
