From what I remember there are TWO 2-wire connectors that go to the transmission. One goes to the top of the trans (really hard to get to unless you've done a body lift which would give you more room around the top of the transmission), the other to the side. One of these "closes" when you are in 5th gear (the computer wants to know), the other "closes" when you are in reverse. I'm sorry, I don't remember which is which. Both pairs of wires go from the transmission to the front of the firewall, and plug in (with round barrel type connectors about the diameter of a nickel) to the rest of the wiring harness right near the distributer on the back of the engine. I think when my backup light sensor gave up the ghost I just wired a ground through a switch on my dash and then to the wiring at the firewall...so when I wanted the backup lights to turn on I'd throw the switch on the dash: That would in turn "ground out" the circuit the same way the transmission switch would, and would complete the backup light circuits so they would light up. I don't have a wiring diagram with me offhand to tell you which wires are which, but I could probably dig one up from my archives if you can't find the info out any other way. Oh yeah, I don't think there was a 'relay' involved at all...but the stock backup lights are a pretty light draw and a relay really isn't needed. And if you do wire in your own switch remember two more things: Cops LOVE to write up tickets for driving down the road with white lights showing to the rear, and since you will be "sending ground" instead of "sending 12 volts" through the switch getting one that "lights" when activated really won't work. (OK OK I know you aren't really "sending ground", you are just completing an already 'hot' circuit to ground...but if you are knowledgeable enough to complain about me saying "sending ground" then you probably know what I mean anyway.) Good luck! Paul prhkgh@comcast.net former owner of 4 samurai's former telephone installer, thousands of hours working low voltage.

What are the wires going to suzuki samurai transmission?

1. sensor to tell the computer when you were driving in 5th gear. 2. sensor to turn on the backup lights when you were in reverse. Also, there are wires going to your transfer case, that light up the '4wd' light to show when you are in 4WD rather than 2WD, IIRC. Paul H.

How do you wire your 87 samurai backup lights bypassing the backup light transmission mounted switch?

You would have to literally run a wire from the battery through a fuse and then to a toggle switch and then on to the backup lights, this will only function when the switch is on and will have nothing to do with the transmission being in reverse. This is essentially the same as putting a toggle switch across the transmission mounted switch (assuming the transmission switch is not shorted).

Backup lights do not work on 2001 Sunfire Cannot get to the backup switch if it's located on the Manual Transmission?

The backup light switch is located on the transmission behind the driver's side front wheel. If the wheel is removed, you can see the switch. It's located directly below the shift cables and is easily accessible with a 17 or 19mm wrench. The plug is a two wire type that has a latch that must be lifted up to remove the plug.
