As no two children with autism are alike, the best approach is an individualized one. The answer to your question depends on A) THE AGE OF THE CHILD IN QUESTION and B) The severity of the syndrome ie. Is the child very high functioning or is he/she severely affected?

The very first thing to do is EDUCATE yourself on the education law (IDEA) and on autism. Keep all records, behavior, doctor's visits, medical records, etc.

If your child is younger than three, the first thing to do is have the child evaluated by an "Early Intervention" team, Preschool Assessment Center or infant/ toddler connection. They will then inform you of your child's needs and the services available.

If the child is of school age, request an evaluation through the public school system.

The approach for a child who is severely affected will be very different from the approach for a high functioning child. There are a lot of sites claiming a CURE-- AVOID them like the plague!! They are nothing but quacks---THERE IS NO CURE FOR AUTISM--ONLY APPROPRIATE AND EARLY EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTION.

Finally, find out what programs are offered through the public school system and if the teachers have been trained in Autism Spectrum Disorders. Some states are known to be further advanced in autism programs--California, New York. Look into the services and talk to Occupational therapists, physical therapists and developmental specialists; they usually know the best programs/ schools but I can't stress enough that your own homework will provide the most accurate answers as to what is best for your child. BECOME AN EXPERT IN AUTISM AND THE IDEA-- THE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT .

I have lived in only two states to compare, but it may help! We lived in Charlotte, NC and my son was on many wait-list for services and many times his papers or files would get lost in the system. They did have many more professionals in all areas, but long drives and waits to get appointments made it hard to get needed services.

We moved back to my home state of WV and I am proud to say that the MR/DD waiver title XIX program is exceptional and very accessible through the DHHR. I am getting help that I never knew was out there and it only took about 1 year to get on. They also realize that it is almost impossible for a parent with an autistic child to hold down a job and WV is one of only two states to pay a parent for training their child on goals for 4-6 hours a day!

Good luck and I hope this has helped a little.

it depends on how severely disabled they are if they struggle to focus and need one-to-one with their learning then a special school is better as they have smaller classes and are obviously knowledgeable and equipped to enhance the learning of the child however a mainstream school is an option if they are only mildly autistic, so long as the school has a good support team as you can negotiate as to how many hours of support your child can receive where it is needed most such as during lessons, breaktimes and in between lessons
