If not hanged properly, an oil painting can loose its beauty and get damaged over the course of time. Always hang an oil painting in a room which has a stable room temperature and where direct sunlight does not fall. Don't hang the oil painting in hallways or in busy corridors on walls where frequent family movement takes place. Even a place close to the kitchen, bathroom or anywhere which has the tendency to get damp is also not a good place to hang an oil painting. At all times, keep them dry (himidity will cause oil layers to go misty). Darkness is good for the pigments. The oil itself (in the oil paint) will darken when kept in the dark, but will go clear again in the light.

Then, very important, don't let anything lean against the canvas itself - only against the frame. Artists often make frame-racks to store paintings, like closets without shelves or boards. A few paintings can lean against each other, as long as no corner of one touches the other painting's canvas. Air circulation will help the painting to dry further (oil paint keeps drying)
