The best place to put it is on your body, fastened in place. It does not work with a hoot if you are not wearing it. Last year we investigated a double night time fatality- 2 drowned boaters. We found their PFDs. They were nice and neat- still in the plastic bags they were in when they were purchased. Not only were they not being worn, they had never been taken out of their bags.

Whenever the boat is underway, properly sized PFDs must be worn by children under 13 years of age in North Carolina.
Whenever a boat less than 26 feet is underway, properly sized PFDs must be worn by children less than 6 years of age in Florida. Whenever the boat is underway, properly sized PFDs must be worn by children 9 years of age and under in Georgia.
