Look at the upper end of the brake pedal under dash area
as far as I know, left side of the steering column. At least, on the column somewhere.
Check the release switch that connects to the brakes. On many vehicles the brake light switch will cause the cruise to disengage. Next time, try pulling up on the brake pedal when you engage cruise. If it works when you're pulling up, you might be able to adjust the switch. It's physically connected to the brake pedal.
Look at the uper end of the brake pedal under the dash area
It is located on a bracket about 8 or 9 inches above the pedal pad for the brakes...should have an electrical connector plugged into the back end of it. Pending on cruise control the assembly could be plastic or threaded metal as the switch body. Stu Louisville KY
Check fuses and bulbs first - either could be breaking the circuit and casuing the problem. See sources and related links below for bulb informtion. The brake switch is usually up underneith the dash near/connected to the brake pedal.
usually it is a fault with the brake light switch located on the brake pedal arm. there is a plastic button that sometimes disintegrates and no longer allows contact with the switch. Check that first. You can find a replacement by using a body fastener.

On a 1998 Chevy Blazer, the parking brake switch is located on the top of the parking brake assembly. There are 3 bolts that hold the switch to the parking brake assembly.
The brake light switch relay for your 1997 Chevy truck is located beneath the drivers side dashboard. The brake light relay switch will be above the brake pedal.

the switch is located on a bracket at the top of the brake pedal (its the switch with 2 connectors) the other 1 is for cruise control system.
The TCC switch is located next to the brake switch at the top of the brake pedal, under the dash.
Try changing the brake light switch (located on the brake pedal, by the steering column) under the dash.
On my 89 it's right behind the park brake
