The 1998 Toyota ignition coil is located on the firewall, in the engine compartment. The ignition coil can be found on the passenger side of the firewall.
If you have disributorless ignition it will be mounted under the coil pack . If you vehicle still has a distributor it will be in the dist.

From what I can find out it seems to be located inside the distributor. You must remove the distributor cap to see it. For pictures check the link.

make sure the negative battery terminal is disconnected ignition coil is located inside the distributor cap, it does look like a small squar box with a circular tube

Where all the wires plug into. That is the ignition coil. The ignition coil is inside the distributor behind the cap. Remove the distributor cap screws, remove the cap and you will see the coil.
