I just replaced mine on my 200 GP 3800 and it is directly below the thermostat on the right side of the plastic cover. You need to remove that cover to see it by removing your engine oil fill cap and then twisting the collar until it releases. Then you can remove the big plastic cover and see where the thermostat is. If you have trouble finding the thermostat, just follow the top radiator hose until it reaches the engine. The Coolant Temperature Sensor is right below it, installed angling toward the thermostat. You need a socket (3/8 inch spark plug socket with the rubber insert removed works well) with an elbow to reach it. Good luck!
Coolant Temperature Sensor
I have a 1998 Pontiac Grand AM GT that coolant sensor went bad. So how do you change it with out breaking the coolant
it is located below thermostat on driver side.
In answer to your question the coolant temperature sensor on a 2000 Pontiac grand am with a 3.4L engine, is located on the rear of the engine above the flywheel. It is located just behind the what I believe is the alternator.
Look at the rear of the radiator approx. 1/3 down from the top
Trouble code P0118 means: Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input Replace the Coolant Temp Sensor
low antifreeze , or faulty coolant sensor .

usually when you add coolant light goes off Coolant sensor bad?
There is 2 coolant sensors. 1 is for the temperature gauge and the other is for the computer to tell it what fuel mixture is needed.

look on the goosenneck under where the air cleaner is. It's attached to the lower part actually on the manifold.
its underneathe the alternater, right next to the bypass hose inlet.
There are two separate sensors that play here. the "coolant temperature sensor" and "coolant LEVEL sensor". I suggest confirming which of these was replaced, as it is very common for them to be confused. likely you will find the coolant sensor that was replaced was the one on the engine (temperature); The LEVEL sensor is mounted either in the coolant resivoir or in the radiator. Probably just need the proper sensor replaced.
There is a sensor located at the bottom of the coolant reservoir.
Losen the exhaust cross over and take off temp sensor
Adding coolant to a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am is very easy to do. The coolant can be directly added to the radiator. Make sure the engine is not hot before adding the coolant.
