The city of Khartoum is the capital of the Republic of Sudan (on the African continent). Population: 1,970,000.

15°32'38.35"N 32°32'8.44"E

Physically it is located in the central-eastern part of the country at the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile tributaries. The Nile rivers divide Khartoum like an inverted Y, the city of Khartoum is located to the south with the White Nile to the left and the Blue Nile to the right of the city (when facing North); the Nile tributaries converge at the north-western corner of the city. On the western side of the inverted Y is the old city of Omduruman and on the eastern side (of the inverted Y) is Khartoum North (which is more industrial and light industrial).

The city its self is not very sophisticated, years of sanctions and poor economic conditions have resulted in the deterioration of the infrastructure (roads, electricity and buildings); although over the past few years more money is being spent to upgrade these - in some areas it is a matter of too little too late. Most builidings are constructed from a combination of concrete and sun-dried mud bricks (brickwork's are plentiful along the river during the dry season).

The parliamentary buildings, museum and some hotels are situated along Nile Avenue which is on the Blue Nile along the Northern border of the city.

Khartoum is also home base to a large number of international aid organisations (UN, Care etc.) due to its proximity to Darfur and other points of humanitarian interest within the region.

The city is serviced by a single domestic airport which is located in the heart of the city; and which in recent years has been the site of numerous aircraft accidents.

Founded c. 1821 as an Egyptian army camp, it was destroyed by Mahdists in 1885. Lord Kitchener retook the city in 1898 and oversaw its rebuilding. In earlier history Khartoum may have been used as a trading station by the Nubians and Egyptians due to its location on the River Nile. The area surround Khartoum is dotted with numerous ancient Egyptian ruins.
