the crankshaft position sensor is located on the under harmonic balance wheel. loosen the drive belt, with a harmonic puller remove the wheel careful not to bend or injure it in any way). Unplug the sensor located on the lower left side. remove and replace sensor. Be careful not to pull on the connector or wires. Inspect them for damage. Reverse the above step to replace. A word of advise: Be sure to have the sensor "CASE/RELEARNED". The new sensor must be told what its job is. I replaced two sensors and wire before find out about CASE/RELEARN. Once that's done what a difference. Finally! Good luck.
The crank sensor is located on the bottom of the timing cover under the right hand side of the water pump by the crankshaft pulley.

The crank shaft sensor on a 1998 BMW 74Oil is located down near the crank on the front of a motor. It is super easy to replace but sometimes reaching the harness wire is a little bit difficult.
