actually, the previous answer is false. Prokaryotes most definitely have an electron transport chain, as does anything that undergoes cellular respiration and makes ATP. The ETC in prokaryotes is located on the cell membrane. This differs from the location in eukaryotes, which is on the liquidy matrix of the mitochondrial membrane. This location difference is the reason why the number of ATP produced in the ETC differs slightly between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

The electron transport chain in prokaryotic organisms is found in their cell membranes. This is because prokaryotes lack membrane bound organelles.

Where are the enzymes for electron transport located in bacteria if they don't have internal membranes?

Incorrect: Some bacteria do not have an electron transport chain and just glycolysis. If they do have an electron transport chain, then it would take place in the mitochondria.User response: Actually bacteria do not have a mitochondrium. Their electron transport chain is located inside their cytoplasmic membrane.
