It is located on the back (firewall) side of the engine block beneath the intake manifold. It's a real pain to get to.

How do you replace knock sensor 1996 altima?

The knock sensor is located on the firewall side of the engine. Exactly in the center of the engine and its held on by an 10 mm bolt. But to replace it you must pull the engine half way out. I have the same problem with my 95 Altima. Its to far away to get it from the bottom, and blocked by a lot of stuff from the topside. If you happen to get it loose, the bolt hits a metal water pipe, so the sensor is still cinnected to the engine.
