On the 89 2.2L automatic, while looking at the engine from the front of the car,it's an aluminum "box" on the frame between the battery compartment/fuses and engine. If you have someone sit in the car and run the shifter thru the gears, U will see the linkage on the top of the neutral switch move. The chiltons manual tells how to reset the switch.. which I gave up on and just bought a new one. Autozone had one in stock for about 40 bucks I think. It was real easy to change - and I'm not a mechanic in any way, shape, or form. If you have a standard tranny, I'm not sure if it's in the same place. Not to plug a website, BUT, rocks for info and guidance on the MX6.. I have even got spare parts from members there. Happy motoring!

On a 1993 Mazda Protege, neutral safety switch (also called the shift interlock switch) is located at the top of the brake pedal. It is situated between the headlight relay and the clutch switch.
