On the tee, always stand opposite of the player who is teeing off. When you're playing your shot, make sure are opposite you, too. If they're behind you, or at right angles to you, there is, at worst, the danger of hitting someone with a backswing, or at best, it can implant the notion someone might get hit - which is the last thing you should, or need to be thinking about.
