The rotor button is inside the distributor cap.
On my 97 jeep grand Cherokee, with the 5.2 liter v8, its located in the distributor, under cap & rotor.
It is also known as a Pickup Coil that is located under the rotor inside the Distributor cap.

The minimim rotor thickness for the rotor is cast into the Sid of the rotor itself. Older modles are cast on the inside edge on the flat area near the bolt holes. Later models are stamped on the outer edge. Z_Factor1
I would replace distributor cap & rotor button, plugs & wires, and if necessary distributor. Also, check your ignition timing, if you broke a timing chain you wouldn't have any spark.
