There should be a tag on the very rear of the mower, behind and below where the drivers seat is that will have that information.

lift top hood its on a hinge, place angle bracket with slot over hook at the back inside corner hope this helps
The STX-38 should have an electric clutch for the mower deck. The switch to engage it is on the right rear fender. It is a toggle switch. You will have to pull up on the switch and forward to engage the blades.
the answer to this question is yes but the back tabs off of the deck on the 165hydro have got to be welded on to the deck of the stx38 and the back attachment rods have got to have another hole drill in the end and two spacer blocks (one each side) of two inch square tubing must be fabed to move the location out father apart because the 165 uses the outside of the… Read More
You should be able to remove the battery and the battery tray from under the seat and get right to the transmission pulley. Just remove the nut from the shaft and it should slip right off.
Let dipstick threads rest on top of tube, rotate cap COUNTER clockwise until it "clicks" or drop into the thread lead...then pull straight out to do reading.
a garden variety 95-96 inch belt will work in a pinch. I've been running one from the local auto parts store for two year and mowing approx 2 acres per week with it.
According to Youtube
Should be between 1 and 1.5 quarts. More: After 3/4 of the first quart, add oil a little at a time and check the oil level frequently. The correct oil level is between the hatch marks on the dip-stick - you don't want to overfill.
few hundred $
The belt is a M74747 which is 1/2" x 105"
I just purchased a used STX38 and used it twice, the first time no problem, this time it seemed to be hot, I turned it off to talk with a neighbor and later when I tried to start it it would hum then tried to turn over but just a small try. Not sure what the problem is. Says it was made between 1988-1997, it has a Kohler 12.5 hp. Not even sure now if… Read More
Open the hood and look on both sides near the hinges. There is a spring on each side. Grab the motor end of the spring and pull the end off of the bracket. Once you have both springs removed, lower the hood about 3/4 of the way and pull the bottom front of the hood forward off the hinges.
I believe that deck uses sealed permanently lubed bearings.
How do you replace a mower deck belt on a stx38 hydro
Insufficient fuel flow would be the most likely cause.
There is a small switch on the right fender close to the key switch. If it is still the original switch you need to pull it upward as you switch it.
the ignition coil is probably bad-when they get hot they quit running. when they cool down it will restart and run until it warms up again. Another possibility is that there may be debris under the plastic engine cover that is blocking the air flow to the head causing it to overheat. There are only five screws holding this cover on. Once you remove them you can slide the cover off and check to make… Read More
Raise mower deck with lift lever to highest position. Put blocks under each side of deck for safety. Hold blade with gloves and remove center cap screw by turning it counterclockwise. Remove washer and blade. Repeat for each blade. To install, reverse above procedures, use gloves or rag to hold blade. Tighten center cap screw to 55 lb-ft.
We had the same problem with ours. We tried a few things. We cleaned the battery posts to make sure there was a good connection. Then we reconnected the safety wire underneath the seat. It's the one that kills the engine if you fall off. My father preferred to drive without it, and had no problems for quite a while. Then, for no apparent reason, it would die when he tried to take off. Reconnecting… Read More
I'm having the same issue. I'm trying to replace my front axle and I need to remove the muffler to get to the axle bolt. Please help. I recently replaced the front axle on my STX38 so I took off the muffler as well. The muffler's heat shield needs to come off first, I think there's just two bolts holding that in place on the front of it. If I remember correctly, there were 4… Read More
Once of the safety devices is engaged or the ignition switch is defective or you have a blown fuse. It is also possible the starter is bad.
My John Deere STX38 black deck would fall off every time I hit a dirt mound or unseen tree root. The two steel bars would jump over the washers above the top rear of the deck and the deck would fall to the ground. The last time it did it, it broke a one month old $40.00 belt. I fixed the problem by removing the two bolts (one on the left side, one on the… Read More

What causes your stx38 to crank while switch is in off position while using jumper cables to charge battery?
I have seen this on well used equipment from time to time. Two things I have seen: A bad diode in the wiring harness (that is, if this particular unit has one) or what we call carbon tracking on the internal sliding components of the ignition switch allowing current flow regardless of switch position. Also moisture in the switch will allow current flow.
Your STX-38 should have either a 12.5 or a 13 HP Kohler engine. Those engines have two studs that hold the exhaust to the engine. You should be able to pop the two springs loose on the hood hinge and take the hood off by un-hooking it from the 2 hood support brackets. Once the hood is off you will easily be able to see the two studs for the exhaust on the front side… Read More
On the lower portion of the left side of the engine you'll find a long pipe with a threaded pipe plug cap on the end. That's the oil drain pipe. Remove the plug cap with an adjustable wrench (use a pair of channel locks on the pipe itself if it starts to un-thread from the motor). Drain out the old oil and replace the pipe plug. The oil filter is right next to it (looks… Read More
I found this while trying to do mine. I just finished 5 minutes ago and here's how I did it. I jacked up the back end (I just shoved an old car rim under the rear transaxle, but a floor jack would work better) I removed the rear wheel (twist and pull on yellow plastic center cap, remove clip, pull off wheel -- keep an eye on square steel key) There just in front of… Read More
The center-to-center spacing between the engine shaft and the jackshaft (i.e. spacing between the dead centers of the two bolt holes that will secure the two Comet pulleys) must be exact for a particular belt. The jackshaft will extend out farther than the Vanguard shaft so here is the most accurate way to measure the spacing: Put an accurate ruler against the back side of the Vanguard engine shaft and let it extend straight past… Read More
