Which type of tractor are you talking about? John Deere used similar numbering systems for its various models of tractors. My best suggestion for you is to try your local John Deere dealer and by giving them a full description of your tractor they can easily tell you what year your tractor was made.
On unstyled tractors check the left side in front on the flywheel, on styled tractors check the right side in front of the clutch pulley.
