The smallest country in Europe (and on the world) is Vatican City. Vatican City is only 0.44 sq km (0.17 sq mi). It is situated in Rome and is the city of the Pope (which makes him head of state of Vatican City).

The smallest country not related to the Church is Monaco, in Southern France. 2 sq km (0.77 sq mi).

The smallest country in Europe (in the world in fact) is the independent state of the Vatican City. The Vatican City is 0.2 square miles in size and has a population of 770 people. No permanent residents live here however.
