I'am not sure about your vehicle, but most have a cable that runs from your speedometer to the transmission. speed is read by a gear that spins the cable. most of the time the cable is simply broken and is pretty easy to replace. if you have a digital speedometer it is usually a simple two wire cord that runs from the side of trasnsmission to speedometer. either way speed is read off the transmission on my 93 f-150 the speedometer sensor is on the third member of the rear end. I have a 1995 F150 5.8 auto 4x4. My speed sensor is on the tail shaft of the transfer case.

if i remember correctly they did not start using an electronic speedometer in f150's till 1992 so your vehicle should still have a mechanical speedometer which has a cable ran down to your transmission. the sensor on the rear differential on those models is an abs sensor on 92 and later its the abs and speed sensor.

www.motorcraft.com doesn't list an air mass sensor ( MAF ) on the F150 until the 1994 model year

I have the same problem with my 1994 F150 except it will shift down from overdrive...let me know if you get an answer..dcfrisbie@gmail.com I have a 1994 ford F150 which was doing the same thing...ended up being the throttle position sensor...Drives like a new truck after new one was installed....
