The speedometer cable on a 1987 Mazda 323 is located on top of the transmission and travels up to the dashboard. It helps the vehicle's computer monitor speeds constantly.
It doesn't have a speedometer cable. The speedometer is operated electronically.
There are several things you can do to repair your speedometer. You can replace the speedometer cable. You can replace the speed sensor in the transmission.
Broken speedometer cable?
I've replaced the speedometer Cable on my 87 Supra with manual Tranny and they're in two pieces the short piece which around 14" is underneath beside the transmission and could be replaced individually.
you have to take the dash apart...that is the speedometer assembly. once you start to take the cluster off, the speedometer cable is snapped onto the speedometer. you take that apart and the cable will pull out. be sure to put your bolts that you pull out of the dash in order so you do not confuse where they go...plastic strips easily.
The 1987 Chevy Celebrity uses an electronic speedometer, there is no speedometer cable. Assuming your speedometer has failed here are some possible causes: The VSS. vehicle speed sensor, may have failed. The speedometer may have failed. The ECM, engine control module aka computer, may have failed. There may be wiring issues such as unplugged, dirty connections, broken wires, etc.
It is located in the boot, under the spare tyre
The speedo cable on an 87, usually is an electrical hook up, in which case is run by wires, to an output on the tail shaft of the transmission. Mine on the other hand is cable, because I changed it, therefore the cable hooks up the back of the gauge cluster.
one end is going to be of course besind the spedo gauge in your cluster and the other end will be ithe in you transaxle orif you have cruise control it will be at the cruise control transducer.
