Depending on your engine which I'm gonna take a long shot and say you have the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder. It is on the front of the transmission. Must take exhaust manifold heat shield off and you will see starter under exhaust manifold EDIT: To add to the above, concerning the 2.7 liter model, it is also at the front of the car. Get on the ground at the front of the car and put your head at the center line of the vehicle. Now, scoot underneath the car about a foot and look up, just to the right of center-line (be sure the car is not running and the car is in park--- of course). You will see an aluminum shield about the size of a pie pan, in the shape of a square. This is a protective shield which protects the starter. Get a small socket and ratchet and remove the two bolts holding the heat shield on. Once the bolts are off, the heat shield should move freely. You might not be able to remove it completely, but you can slide it toward the exhaust and out of the way. Once the shield is out of the way, you will see your starter. This answer also applies to the 2002 Kia Optima with the 2.7 L engine and may apply to other models also. I have no idea why it is so difficult to find such data for the Kia Optima. STARTER DOESN'T TURN OVER -- DOES NOTHING

2001 and 2002 Kias have an interesting problem with starters. When the starter starts to get old, you may find that nothing happens when you turn your key over (No cranking sound at all... no ticking, etc.). If your lights work fine but your starter does nothing when you turn the key, your starter may be on its last leg. You may be able to get it to turn over, though, if you remove the starer heat shield (as described above) and whack the starter a few times with a small hammer. Kia mechanics and Kia Optima owners are well aware of this problem with the starter on the Kia Optima in this year range. If this is the case with your starter, you should replace the starter as soon as you are able as the problem will continue to worsen and may eventually leave you stranded and banging on it may fail to work.

It is next to the oil filter behind the engine; you have to access it from underneath. Contrary to what is written in the Chilton manuals, THERE IS NO NEED TO BREAK OPEN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM TO REPLACE THE STARTER MOTOR! I was able to change the starter motor on a 1998 Kia Sephia with the 1.8L DOHC engine without so much as kneeling. It is located at the upper-rear of the flywheel, just below the air-induction casting. After undoing the three bolts attaching it to the engine, the starter motor can be moved towards the passenger side of the engine. If the vapor recovery canister is simply pulled upwards, it comes out of the way, and the starter can then be cleared out of the engine.

The location of the starter is underneath the intake manifold. You can just barily see it. In order to remove it, you must first remove two of the bolts, which are on the opposite side, on the transimision. It does help to remove the intake tubing come from the air filter to get to the bolts easier. The third and final bolt in on the starter side. I would very stronly recommend getting an air powered rachet, as there is NO room to really move a wrench (intake mainfold in the way. You will be doing most of this by feel, so it does help to have already purchase the starter and have it sitting there so you can see how the bolts are laid out. Have fun! The place is correct only don't forget to take off the mass cable from the battery, the + cable on top and the activating cable on the side of the starter solenoid. These can only be reached from under the car. You can't get the starter out if not detached and lossing them after you lossened the startet is difficult.

The starter should be attached to the transaxle with 2 or 3 bolts. You can see the starter by looking underneath the car while it is on ramps.

The starter, on your 2004 Kia, is located near the front of the engine at the bottom. You can follow the positive battery cable from the battery directly to the starter.
