There could be many reasons why a 1995 Mazda MX6 is not starting. Some of the reasons could be a bad alternator, starter, battery, or fuel pump.
The starter, on a 1994 Mazda Protege, is located on the driver's side of the engine. It is just behind and to the right of the oil fill cap.

On the top of the transmission. I leads into the fire wall so it should be easy to find.
the starter is near the driver's side front tire. there are 3 screws to take off which are very complicated. I ended up using a mechanic since he was able to find a cheaper starter for me anyways.
