if the 97' Nissan is anything like the 98' Nissan, a problem that i am currently dealing with, the starter should be located under the manifold and tuck in toward the radiator. On the 98' it nearly impossible to reach from underneath and was not only impossible to reach but also impossible to visualize from the top, unless as stated before the manifold is seemingly completely removed. .
On the 1600cc (black plastic valve cover) engines from 95 to 99 The starter is under the air intake manifold between the block and the firewall, it is removable from the bottom but the top bolt where the ground attaches has to be done from the top. Underneath there is a strut in the way (take off the two bolts and push it aside) and remove the oil filter (small tub to catch a bit of oil is needed), unplug the one connection to the solenoid and unbolt the wire from the rear of it. Remove. Reverse procedure to replace it. I haven't done mine yet (a 95 XE) but it is pooched, this answer is gleaned from several sites.
