The temp sensor is generally screwed into the thermostat housing. Not sure what the issue is you are having, but with my 01 Grand Cherokee I had a cooling fan relay fail. Basically the fan wasnt working, tested it using jumpers and it worked fine. Learned through online that the relay is located behind the front bumper. Basically you remove the passenger side headlight and use a hole saw and drill a hole in the top of the bumper. The relay is right there. Also, the drilled hole is invisible once you re install the headlight. Hope this helps.
the temp sending unit for the gauge is located on the top of the motor on the driver side next to the valve cover in the back.
The engine coolant temp sensor for the computer is in the thermostat housing.
The temperature sending unit on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4 liter is screwed into the thermostat housing on the front of the engine.
If you are looking at the front of the engine it is in the back right bolted right into the block. A harness with one wire is connected to it.

It's a 30 dollar part. The unit should be located near the filter. Unplug/Unscrew the old one and insert new and plug in.
I have found though my experiences that 99% of the time the fuel gauge sending unit in the tank has failed.
Check sending unit or sending unit wiring for short to ground. Also could be a plugged oil line causing a spike in pressure. Try installing a mechanical gauge to get an accurate pressure reading.
I have the same problem.. my 95 grand Cherokee ltd v8 5.2 just happened the other day. i was told it might be either the oil pressure sending unit? or the rear main seal which i disbelieve.

The AC compressor on a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be repaired by purchasing a new unit or by sending the existing unit off for repairs. These are sealed units which do not have user serviceable parts beyond the outer seals.
Coolant temperature sending unit is located on the front of the engine. The cooling temperature sending unit will be on the right hand side of the engine.

On the 4.7 V8 it is above the oil filter, you'll see the wires going to it.I checked and it is a 1 1/16" deep socket for the sending unit.

There is a temperature sending unit installed somewhere on your engine for your temperature guage in your gauge panel , another temperature sending unit for your EEC - IV or EEC V electronic engine control system , newer Ford engines that have FAIL - SAFE cooling have a cylinder head temperature ( CHT ) sensor / sending unit if you have an outside temperature display there is a sensor / sending unit for that , some automatic transmissions have a temperature sending unit / sensor that will give a warning if the automatic transmission is running too hot etc
