Not so. It's connected to / within the BOTTOM radiator hose on older model Tercels. I have an '88 and was hard pressed to find it on this top hose everyone is talking about. Searched the 'Net for days and came up with nothing. It's on the bottom. You will find the thermostat under the thermostat housing. Trace you top rad hose back to where it meets the engine and under that is the thermostat housing. Remove housing and VOILA!!!!

The 1987 Toyota oil filter is located on the back side of the engine, near the bottom. You will need to crawl underneath the car to see the oil filter
I did an 88 recently. facing the engine it is on the left. Follow the hose from the radiator.

The Thermostat is located to the pasenger side of the Valve cover, just folow your upper radiator hose back and it will be in the housing that the hose conects too.
The alternator is on the passenger side between the firewall and the motor.

The thermostat on a 1987 BMW 325i can be found by following the upper radiator hose. The thermostat will be located on the side of the engine.
Check the flasher.
