it is in the water pump on a diesel under the injecter pump there is to nuts behind th injector pump vert littel room to get them out

The 1997 VW Jetta thermostat is located inside of the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. Remove the water supply hose. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.

I just had the thermostat housing replaced on my 99 Jetta VR6. It's on the right (driver's) side of the engine block. The battery and battery tray should be removed to get access to the thermostat.

According to the Haynes manual, the thermostat is located by follwing the lower radiator hase from the radiator back to the engine. The housing for the thermostat is bolted on the side of the engine block facing the radiator.

The starter relay on a VW Jetta is located in the engine compartment fuse box. This fuse box is located on top of the battery.

The thermostat is located at the engine end of the lower radiator hose (passenger side). If the car has power-steering the power steering pump and mounting bracket have to be removed to get to the thermostat housing. The thermostat is at the end of the bottom hose, in the water pump housing ..not the top.
