I have a 1997 Grand Prix SE, 3.1 V6. Not the same as yours, but maybe this'll help.

I recently replaced mine. It's located (viewing from the front of the car) on the right side of the engine, mid point just at the point where the radiator cooling hose meets the engine. I had to remove a few pieces like the throttle body (not a biggie mind you) and relocate the cables out of my way. The thermostat housing is quite visible once the throttle body is removed. Remove the mounting bolts; separate the housing, remove the thermostat and you're done. Be sure to scrape the old gasket off and repplace with a new one. Re-assamble in opposite order and again, you're done!!

It took me about 30 minutes to figure out how to get to the thermostat housing, but once I found it, I was in and out in about 25 minutes!! you out somewhat.

The 96 through 98 Grand Am's are essentially the same cars, just with different standard equipment and options. Another way to get to the thermostat housing is to remove the duct from the air cleaner housing. Then remove the siver metal shield on the exhaust system cross over pipe, then the cross over pipe itself. This will give you full access to the thermostat housing mount bolts. After that, just follow the directions of the previous poster.
