When working on a document, you are working in the computer's Random Access Memory (RAM). Though very quick, RAM is a volatile memory. If you don't save your document to the internal hard drive, or to an external storage device, before turning off the computer, all is lost - the document no longer exists.
If working on an important document, save to the hard drive every few paragraphs. Then, if things go wrong, you only need to begin again at your last save, and not from the beginning again. Save as you go is good advice.

Where is a document saved?

They are stored wherever the user wants to save them to. There is usually a default folder to save them to that can be set in the options in Excel. Normally it is the user's My Documents folder. It can be changed and the user is free to save a file wherever they want to if they don't want it to go to the default folder, so there is no single answer to the question.

Where are documents created in Microsoft word?

While being edited (before it's intentionally saved) Word documents are stored in the system's random access memory (RAM). Once the file is "saved" (*file, save as*), it is stored in the selected memory device. Saving a file to My Documents, for example, would save to the hard drive, solid state drive, jump drive, etc: the actual hardware where "My Documents" is located.

Why do computer users save documents to their computer?

Because a computer provides a large amount of space which data can be stored on like documents etc. All documents should be backed up because if the hard drive fails, it will lose all data including the documents.
