For a gas engine, it is part of the fuel pump in the tank. On a diesel engine, it is on the driver side of the block.

Mines a 2000. I just had mine changed. It's between the truck and the gas tank so ya have to drop the tank. Now, that's if your 96's is in the same location as my 2000.
