The earthquakes affecting the largest area of the US were the four New Madrid earthquakes that affected over 50,000 square miles of the American frontier. There were two on December 16, 1811 (7.9 to 8.1), one on January 23, 1812 (7.0 to 7.8), and one on February 12, 1812 (7.4 to 8.0). They struck in northern Arkansas and near New Madrid, Missouri on the Mississippi River border with Tennessee.

The biggest was in Prince William Sound, Alaska. It was on March 27, 1964 with a magnitude of 9.2. The earthquake itself killed 15 people and a following tsunami killed another 113. It costs about $311 million dollars in property loss. A landslide caused by the quake crashed down on about 75 homes and occupied 130 acres.

The epicenter of the earthquake was approximately 12.4 miles (20 km) north of Prince William Sound and 78 miles (120 km) east south east of Anchorage.

It's exact location was 61 deg 3' 0'' N, 147 deg 28' 48'' W.
